BACK BITTERN STREET PROJECT

2007-2008

Mackinnon-Day and Carpenter collaboration

THE SCARLET BITTERN

The Scarlet Bittern event took place in December 06 and it sought to establish an intimate introduction and exchange with the residents with mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, live performance, installations and projections.

The event was located in an unconventional performance space, a disused playground often affected by anti social activities. The event was literally on the door step of the residents and the new art and design academy. Mackinnon-Day and Carpenter brought a range of media that was entirely new to the area: large video projections of original art work, structures, digital sounds and live opera performances. The event was something of a spectacle, uplifting and activating this forgotten social space. It created an extraordinary juxtaposition between the two elements at this culturally vital time for the residents and the Art and Design Academy’s re-evaluation, creating a time and space for discussion about potential and future aspiration.
