ENSEMBLE

 

The human interrelationships on which the shipyard’s physical operations depend are investigated further in Ensemble.

 

In the workplace overalls of different colour signify different grades of employee, from senior management in white to general workforce in blue, cut across to some extent by function. In donning the overalls, an individual’s identity is daily subsumed and the hierarchy of the workplace re-affirmed. Mackinnon-Day nevertheless hints at the individuality beneath through different degrees of fading within each colour. Speakers are concealed within the different coloured overalls. The viewer can listen to the conversations recorded from around the yard giving voice to individuals from the different uniformed groups talking about their work. Interestingly, Mackinnon-Day refers in conversation to speaking with, for example, a "blue overall".
