PROJECT OVERVIEW

Habitats and Hillforts is a Landscape Partnership Scheme focusing on the chain of historically important hill top Iron Age forts that lines Cheshire's Sandstone Ridge. Habitats and Hillforts is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and a partnership of local organisations and residents who are working together to improve the hillforts and their surrounding habitats; enhance access and interpretation, and provide more opportunities for volunteering and training. Raising the awareness of the hillforts is an important aim for the project

Artist Patricia MacKinnon-Day has created time-lapse films that invite you as the viewer to share a unique viewpoint and moments of contemplation as they look out across six spectacular landscapes along mid-Cheshire’s Sandstone Ridge that roll through night and day, season through season.

MacKinnon-Day worked with six local people who ‘own’ spectacular private panoramic views of the six historical hillforts overlooking Helsby, Woodhouse, Eddisbury, Kelsborrow, Beeston and Maiden Castle and negotiated with them to access and make these secret places public. Created using time lapse cinematography, these short films remind us of the enduring nature of these ethereal, mysterious ancient monument sites, that date back to the Iron Age.
